USAS held its first meeting of the semester tonight. A main topic of discussion focussed around plans for the semester. As mentioned last semester, our goals are to educate people and have direct actions. We decided that due to time constraint, we should focus on the Coca-Cola boycott, but at the same time educate ourselves and others on other sweatshop issues. With the Coca-Cola issue, we plan on fine tuning an existing Powerpoint presentation and then make presentations to classes on campus. We also discussed making anti-Coca-Cola fliers/posters to put up in classes. How to tackle the ISU vending contract that is currently in negotations, was also discussed. Regaring education, we discussed finding speakers within our budget. Ideas of holding a Global Review with a sweatshop related speaker was brought up, along with showing videos every now and then such as "The Hidden Face of Globalization". We plan to have fliers about USAS meetings created and hopefully posted by the February 4th meeting. Upcoming events to keep in mind: - January 28: Meeting with Nancy Steffan from the WRC,at 7pm at the Coffeehouse. - February 1: Meeting of local progressive groups to discuss what each other is doing and brainstorm (2pm at Coffeehouse). - March 31&April 1: Conference on The Jungle (7PM on the 31st in Bone Student Center; all day on the 1st, location TBA).
